Sometimes point based effect driven power systems act weird. Yes my fingernails are long, sharp and hard but there is no way I could use those to assist in climbing a wall or digging in if something is trying to rip me off the wall. Logic collapses and things get weird.
We'll be using that example for illustration a character who has level 6 claws and thinks they should be helpful in climbing.
This is what we'll be calling a power stunt. The first step is to build a new power that is a compound power between the characters old power and the new ability he is trying to use. In our example the character has claws 6 and is trying to use the spider climb power. In most simple cases like this the compound power has a Level Cost equal to the sum of the Level Costs of the powers -1. For simplicity we'll say that Climbing Claws have a Level Cost of 11.
Power stunts assume that powers with higher Level Costs are more flexible so there is a Level Cost Bonus for every full 5 points of Level Cost in the characters existing power. For example claws have a Level Cost of 7 and so would have a Level Cost Bonus of 1.
With those two numbers it is now possible to determine the Level Cost Difference between the characters old power and the new one. This difference is the Level Cost of the new power minus the Level Cost of the old power plus the Level Cost bonus (new LC - old LC + LC bonus).
Climbing Claws have a Level cost of 11, Claws have a Level Cost of 7 and a Level Cost Bonus of 1. This results in a Level Cost Difference of 3.
Now that the preliminaries are done the character makes a skill roll stat (depends on power) + Use Power + 3D6 vs 20 + Level Cost Difference. If successful the character can use Spider Climb at level 1. But by taking this action the character gains the proto-Climbing Claws Power with a Level of 1 and a Level Cost of 3.
Each time he tries to use the proto-Climbing Claws power the character must make the skill roll above, but modified by the Level of the proto-Climbing Claws Power.
Each adventure that the character uses this power he must spend OP equal to the Level Cost Difference on this power. If the character does not have these OP he incurrs a debt and the next Level Cost Difference OP he gets must go to paying off this debt.
For example after the gaming session when the character first uses climbing claws the character must expend 3 OP to pay for the proto-Climbing Claws power. After the next session he uses the Climbing Claws the character only has 2 OP. The character must pay them toward Climbing Claws and the next OP he gets also must go toward Climbing Claws.
This power grows as normal. It acts a little weird because the first level is lent to the character. After the first session in which it is used the character will have to expend the Level Cost of the power and it will be at level 1. Assuming to extra is spend on it, if the power is used in two other session another 2 times the Level Cost will have been spent and the power will be at level 2.
When proto-Climbing Claws equals the level of Claws the two powers are merged and become Climbing Claws with a Level Cost of 11.
