The second breakthrough that occurred to me is that not all Sunday morning rituals happen in religious space. I saw one 70-year old man who rode into the bookstore parking lot on his bicycle. He had a fancy white hat and wore a pair of white shorts, a white shirt and running shoes. He bought a cup of coffee and a newspaper. When he got settled at an outside table, he reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a big, dark cigar. He sniffed it and licked it. He examined it. He snipped one end with a small cutter. Then slowly he set it on fire, and a great cloud of smoke settled around his head like a wreath.
Other Sunday rituals can prove to be stiff competition for churches
