No Religion

October 31st, 2001

I was reading a report on religious demographics (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/011025/nyth023_1.html) and was struck how the second most popular religion in almost all demographics is ‘No Religion.’ For native americans it trails by a single percentage point.(19% vs 20% for Baptist).

The stats… 14.1% report no religion supporting my recent upgrade from the 10% number to closer to 18% (based on prayer activity post 9/11). Numerically that’s 29.4 million people up sharply from the report in 1990 by adding the ‘, if any’ to the ‘What religion do you identify with?’ question. And to be clear we aren’t talking about non mainline faiths, non-Christian religions accounted 3.7%.

Second response

October 23rd, 2001

My friend sent me his response. The short version is that it isn’t religion but immigrants not respecting our culture and political correctness. I would post the whole thing but it long and I don’t feel comfortable posting someone else’s email.

=========================

There are are couple of issues with your email. First off is you seem to be talking about a number of people and mixing up who is who. There are the terrorists, immigrants, Americans, and your personal american archtype. In your email you seem to make no distinction between terrorists and recent immigrants. You have made a decision that all recent immigrants are in league with terrorists who hate America. You also seem to think it is these immigrants who are responsible for political correctness and the dictation of what you are allowed to think. Those people responsible for PC are not recent immigrants they are people who have been here for generations. They are the children of the 60s not some other culture. They have no where to go back to, they are Americans, not your personal archetypal Americans, but real Americans with different politics and philosophies. PC is a force from within America not external to America.

As for the evil of political correctness, what is PC stopping you from doing. You use PC as a pejorative term without considering what it means. In your email you spoke about respecting women, but how is that different from political correctness stated in a non-pejorative way? The essence of PC is respecting people as people that means not assuming they are like you. That means when engaged in conversation with someone not offending them. And while were at it why is stating that what someone said offended you such a bad thing? That’s what the PC supporters are saying. But in the worst case they are speaking on behalf of someone they believe would be offended but isn’t. But often they speak for those without the courage or security to speak for themselves.

Perhaps it’s gone to far, but since PC is the only thing keeping racial epitaph being spit at my sister in the street I’m not sure I want to roll back our sense of acceptable behavior to where it was in the 50s. The respect encompassed by PC is counter balanced by a disrespect of diversity.

This movement, the one you are espousing says that everyone should be just like “me” and anything I’m not offended by given who I am and my upbringing shouldn’t offend anyone else. It is the belief that since you aren’t offended by humor that is degrading to gay men or blacks or some other minority group they shouldn’t be either. When people say offensive things it is the duty of people offended to stand up and say hang on a second why are you treating me like a second class citizen? My hands are just as strong, my mind just as keen and my blood just as red, why don’t I deserve respect just because I am not part of the mob.

In your email you talked a lot about respect but that is the key concept of PC. Respect is the core of the thing you chosen as the enemy. When you don’t respect someone just because they had a different life than you American culture believes that is wrong. You can still say things but you have to accept the social consequences of your speech. You’ll have endure how your speech alters peoples perception of you. Freedom of speech doesn’t give you freedom from the social consequences of that speech only the unhindered speech and freedom from legal consequences (save libel and slander).

You seem to be convinced that your right be offended by other cultures is absolute. But there are millions of Americans who have been here for generations who don’t think that is a socially acceptable position. Why are you correct and they aren’t. The difference is simple matter of philosophies and preconceptions. I would argue that it’s hard to find a reason to take offense just because someone was raised in a different culture. These are not terrorists or the mythical immigrant who is trying to reshape America into the some other country. These are human beings who have no hatred towards America except for that which is earned by individual Americans. People learn to hate by being hated.

As for interfering with our sovereighnty, since when did our sovereignty extend to other countries? Why do we consider it our right the meddle in the affairs of other governments? Yes we are constrained by the interests of other countries just as other countries are constrained by our interests. We are the lone superpower but do you really think there can be a good outcome if we decide to try and counquer every country with conflicting interests? If we did that WWIII would cast us as the Nazis. We exist in a community of countries and pretending that we exist in a vacuum is burying our head in the sand.

With power comes responsibility. If we abdicate our responsibility as statesmen something will fill that void, probably not in our interests.

You speak about immigrants not following our laws. We arrest and treat rather unfairly(unlimited detention, limited judicial review, secret evidence, etc.) non-citizens who commit crimes. Equally our justice system makes no exception if you came from another country. If anything, since chances are the immigrant is poor and may have communication barriers, the justice system is harsher on them.

As for immigrants honoring our culture because it is theres now, don’t forget the other side of it, there culture is just as much yours. The Immigrants you seem to have a problem with are the ones who have embraced American culture have the gall to speak about it. Question it, see its strengths and weaknesses, find where it can be made better, that is the American way, not the silent acceptance of mob rule.

While Americans have fought and died for freedom in many countries, I object to “just about every.” More to the point we’ve been instrumental in setting in dictatorships and depriving people of freedom. We can not look at our selves through some sort of lens that only allows us to see the good. We must accept our shortcomings along with our virtues.

As for you eye for an eye conclusion, if we are alive and our opponent isn’t it isn’t over. The cycle of vengeance has another turn. Our opponents brother certainly should be held to the same standards as us. An eye for an eye means he has the moral position to kill us for our actions.

To make it less theoretical say we bring to bear our full might against the people of Afghanistan (many of them innocent by any definition). We reduce the country to a deadmans land free from human life (or a reasonable approximation of that). That will have the predictable results of causing the people of Pakistan to revolt and form a hard line Islam theocracy a la the Taliban. The main difference is that they will nuclear weapons and a clear and unquestioned event to point to rally the Islamic world behind. Things go down hill from there.

That is not a path I want to follow, it not a solution its a complication to an already complicated situation.

The previous or succeeding piece was an email forwarded to me and my response to one of the guys I game with. I stand by every word but wonder if this is going to affect my comfort in gaming. At the moment I’m not sure I feel comfortable going over his house to game.

I just have to relax and let it all wash over me.

I had a really good time at happy hour last night. Went to Evening Star Lounge. Thought about calling Jason and Heather but didn’t. For some reason they had some top notch beers downstairs (Guinness, Dogfishhead Stout, Arrogant Bastard Ale) but they had nothing worth drinking upstairs.

After most of the people left, me, Tim and Cindy got into a great discussion about beauty and charisma. It eventually came down to a nature vs nurture debate. Oddly enough me and Tim were on the same side… that never happens. I think Cindy was getting pissed at us. Perhaps I should send an email making sure she didn’t take it personally.

HELLO?? THIS IS AMERICA!

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma School officials remove “God Bless America” signs from schools in fear that someone might be offended.

Channel 12 News in Long Island, New York, orders flags removed from the newsroom and red, white, and blue ribbons removed from the lapels of reporters.

Why?

Management did not want to appear biased and felt that our nations flag might give the appearance that “they lean one way or another”.

Berkeley, California bans US Flags from being displayed on city fire trucks because they didn’t want to offend anyone in the community.

In an “act of tolerance” the head of the public library at Florida Gulf Coast University ordered all “Proud to be an American” signs removed so as to not offend international students.

I, for one, am quite disturbed by these actions of so-called American citizens; and I am tired of this nation worrying about whether or not we are offending some individual or their culture.

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled in New York and Washington DC when the “politically correct” crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America.

In fact, our country’s population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants;

However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some native Americans, need to understand.

First of all, it is not our responsibility to continually try not to offend you in any way. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity.

As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language, and our own lifestyle.

This culture, called the “American Way” has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

Our forefathers fought, bled, and died at places such as Bunker Hill, Antietam, San Juan, Iwo Jima, Normandy, Korea, Vietnam,

We speak English, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society - learn our language!

“In God We Trust” is our national motto.

This is not some off-the-wall, Christian, Right Wing, political slogan; it is our national motto.

It is engraved in stone in the House of Representatives in our Capitol and it is printed on our currency.

We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation; and this is clearly documented throughout our history.

If it is appropriate for our motto to be inscribed in the halls of our highest level of Government, then it is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.

God is in our pledge, our National Anthem, nearly every patriotic song, and in our founding documents. We honor His birth, death, and resurrection as holidays, and we turn to Him in prayer in times of crisis.

If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture and we are proud to have Him.

We are proud of our heritage and those who have so honorably defended our freedoms. We celebrate Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Flag Day.

We have parades, picnics, and barbecues where we proudly wave our flag.

As an American, I have the right to wave my flag, sing my national anthem, quote my national motto, and cite my pledge whenever and wherever I choose.

If the Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don’t like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

The American culture is our way of life, our heritage, and we are proud of it. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don’t care how you did things where you came from, if it was so superior, go home.

We are Americans, like it or not, this is our country, our land, and our lifestyle.

Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion about our government, culture, or society, and we will allow you every opportunity to do so.

But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, the right to leave.

If you agree, pass this onto other Americans!! It is time to take a stand!!

MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA LAND THAT WE LOVE!!!
–Email foreward

I was intending to kindly ask if you could stop sending me these forwards after I read the last one because they disturb me, but this one goes beyond the pale.

Do you realize you just sent me an email suggesting that I am not a real American and that I should shut up and leave the country?

Just yesterday I proudly sent letters to my representative expressing my displeasure over them passing a resolution encouraging schools to post ‘God Bless America.’ I send those letters because of my own sense of exclusion and because of the divisive nature of the statement.

The founding fathers were a heck of a lot more deists than Christians. This country was not founded on religious principles. Every attempt was made to form a completely secular government. All those things pointing to us being being a Christian nation (Pledge of allegiance, National Motto, ‘In God We Trust’) are artifacts of a previous war not the founding of our nation. They are the propaganda equivalent of airplane graveyards. All of those things were done in the 1950’s during our fight with the godless commies. They are not real American culture, they are reactions allowing our enemies define us. They are from the same mindset as McCarthyism.

The Author of that hateful manifesto lacks the vision to see the real strength of America. The strength of America is being allowed to question and speak not blindly following a symbol. What does the flag represent? People are out there waving and putting it up as a religious exercise without taking the time to consider what they are saying.

You can not wave a flag around and at the same time say if you question America (who ever that might be) you should leave. You are denying the diversity of thought, culture and perception that is part of the symbol of the flag. You are denying the meaning of freedom from the symbol. When you take away diversity and freedom what is left that is lofty and good that is represented by the flag?

I am an American. Born and bred here. I consider myself a patriot yet many of the actions taken since Sept 11 offend me. Because I am a patriot I will speak up as loudly as I can. I should be able to do that without having to worry about my patriotism being questioned, but because people seem to believe America is only embodied in their own narrow views I have to worry about my safety when saying reasonable things that I passionately believe.

Our national identity is diversity not conformity. America doesn’t speak with one voice… ever. We speak with many voices and all are accorded respect.

The motto that served us well for over 150 years was ‘e pluribus unum’, ‘From many comes one’ A truly uniting motto. Propagandists who thought like the author changed it into a divisive statement. This country is not served by a national motto that can’t be posted in schools without violating the 1st amendment. Reasonable people can come to the conclusion that the motto itself is a violation of the separation of church and state.

As for turning to God in times of crisis 1 in 5 of your countrymen did not choose to pray after Sept 11. 1 in 2 did not choose to show up at a house of worship. We do not live in a homogeneous country as much as the author would like us to. We live in a world of diversity, and in such a world if you want your opinions respected you must respect others. I’m sorry if the author is upset that people all don’t agree with him. But that is the price of freedom. And it is a price I gladly pay because I am a patriot.

I am also extremely proud that the whenever the author uses the words ‘we’ or ‘our’ he is not including me. He doesn’t speak for America any more than I do. He speaks for himself in the way that gives America strength through diversity of mind and spirit.

I’ve decided to make my New Years Resolution a few months early this year. I’ve said in the past I hold a lot of unpopular opinions. I hold opinions with pride that would get me killed in 98% of recorded history. But I think everyone will like this.

My New Years Resolution is simple… I’m going to fall in love. No not for the rest of my life, but just for the moments. Love doesn’t have to last forever. Every time a pretty girl smiles at me I’m going to fall in love just for a second. Every time someone does something nice to me I’m going to let my heart feel it. Every day, every single day, I’m going to fall in love at least ounce. That way when, God willing (Metaphorically speaking that is), I meet that someone who I want to spend the rest of my life with, falling in love will be that much easier, and it will still be just as sweet.

My Resolution for 2002, and I hope it ones of all of yours too… Fall in love when ever you can.

This pope [Pius IX] who is regarded by many as having inaugurated the modern Catholic Church is also noted for his vitriolic reaction against many basic trends in modernity, in paritcular his creation of the Syllabus of Errors which listed 80 ideas that Catholics were forbidden to accept. Among the list were such nasty things like rationalism, communism, liberalism, freedom of speech, freedom of worship/religion, national churches without papal authority, recognition of religions other than Catholicism, democracy, marriage as a civil institution, and secular schools run by the state. The Syllabus also specifically rejected the idea that the papacy and, by extension, the Roman Catholic Church, could even be reconciled with progress, liberalism, and modern civilization. Such attitudes might appear outdated, but I’ve unfortunately encountered Catholics who seem to adhere to such doctrines devoutly.

A letter to my Representative

October 17th, 2001

I’m confused and upset by the actions of the house in passing a resolution encouraging the violation of church and state. I just read about your (you voted for it) resolution encouraging schools to post ‘God Bless America’ signs. It can not be said that ‘God Bless America’ is a religiously neutral statement. It is clearly encouraging religion and attempting to tie our secular government to some sort of religious vision. A religious manifest destiny.

No one is confused about what or whose god you are referring to. You are not encouraging signs saying ‘Allah bless America’, ‘Goddess bless America’ or ‘May all the gods bless America’ forget about Buddha or the animistic spirits of the American Indians or Shintoism. You are clearly and unambiguously saying may the Christian God bless America. By saying that this is a patriotic statement (which it is not) all you do is separate out all of us who believe differently us unpatriotic. You create a divisiveness that can only come from the invocation of God.

To put it bluntly you just encouraged schools across the country to take the morally equivalent stance of saying ‘America is a White Nation’ and refusing to even recognize the diversity of racial groups we have in this country. When challenged the standard response is the equivalent of saying that some of the lighter colored other racial groups can be considered white. This is not acceptable behavior for my elected representatives.

I keep hearing how we’re supposed to stand together as one nation. If that is what you really want stop doing divisive things. If you want us to stand as one nation remove god as a divisive issue. Return our motto to ‘E Pluribus Unum’ (’Out of Many, One’) a truly uniting statement. Remove god from the pledge of allegiance so that all Americans can say all of it without reservation. Stop giving the power of the state in support religious pronouncements.

Remember that you aren’t my priest. Remember that as many as 15% of Americans don’t believe in any recognizable god. Remember that over half this country never step foot in a religious building except for weddings and funerals. Remember that government works best as a secular entity.

I was under the impression that separation of church and state and the first amendment mean something. At the very least they mean that in your official capacity as a governmental representative you are supposed to neither aid nor hinder religion, you (in your official capacity) are supposed to be religiously neutral. The action you took in encouraging schools posting ‘God Bless America’ failed that test.

I’m very disappointed and I hold you accountable for not having the courage to stand up for ALL your constituents. Unless I see different actions on your part my disappointment will be expressed in the voting booth.
