Congratulations to James

December 27th, 2001

James,

Congratulations, not for giving up religion, but for having the courage to follow your own mind and heart. It is not an easy task and I don’t envy what must follow from it.

As for what to do now… you continue doing what you’ve just done. Remain intellectually honest and do what you believe is right. I expect that some of your friends will believe they can’t be friends with a non-theist, but the ones who matter will stand by you.

You’ll have to rebuild your relationship with your wife. This isn’t the end of your marriage (but it might be a rough spot) as long as neither of you are fundamentalists or zealots. Both my grandfather and great grandfather were non-theists married to religious women.

You’ve come a long way and (like all of us) have a distance to go. There are people on this board who have gone through what you face. I’m sure they’ll be happy offer their support in any way they can.

I’ll leave you with two points, even in Texas more than 1 out of every 10 people has ‘No Religion’ (http://www.gc.cuny.edu/studies/key_findings.htm). You’ve had the courage to follow your mind and heart, you’ve shown you have all you need to live your life honestly, freely and happily.

Congratulations and good luck.
