Religious experiences can be built by suppressed activity in the superior parietal lobe which controls sense of self. Add to that increased activity of the pre-frontal cortex which controls judgment and empathy. So the question becomes how long until science can invoke religious experiences in people at will?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackDr. Persinger, up in Ottawa, started his career examining the effects of very low frequency magnetic fields on the brain; later he became interested in the neurology behind spiritual experience and identified what he called the “God spot”–an area in the temporal lobes that when stimulated triggers profound religious experience. I kid you not. He's built a helmet that'll do it to you. I've read some of his stuff, and if he's a crackpot, he's a crackpot who knows more than I do and has a good grasp of scientific vocabulary.
